Are you a geezer ski legend -- at least in your own mind? If so shuss over to Whiteface Mountain. "Snowboomers" is a hearty geezer jock club for everyone over the age of 50 held at the legendary Adirondack resort in upstate New York. The program includes Alpine as well as Nordic coaching sessions, plus a variety of free events and discounts. Snowboomer members are also entitled to discounts on ski tuneups at Whiteface, ski waxes at the Verizon Sports Complex, and rentals at both venues. The Snowboomer Club meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays through March. The Tuesday program meets at Whiteface at 9 a.m. for Alpine (downhill) coaching. The day begins with a coffee hour from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by a group ski from 10 a.m. to noon. On Thursdays at the Verizon Sports Complex at Mount Van Hoevenberg, a Nordic (cross country) coaching session will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., There's a coffee hour from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.. All coaching sessions are taught by certified professional instructors. Participants will be grouped based on their abilities. The Snowboomer Club meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays through March. Although they accept novices, these are by and large lifetime skiers and they've got personalities to match. ORDA's wonderful press guru Sandy Caligiore tells me "there are some real characters in these groups, including the mother of our CEO. And one of the instructors is the former owner of the Lake Placid News." A club pass costs $325 for the season. Your birthday as of July 7 determines whether you are eligible. And the perks are good: Members last year received a NASTAR pass at Whiteface, a Miracle Photos shoot at the Verizon Sports Complex and Whiteface, a hot beverage and snack at each ski session, as well as a skating party on the Olympic Speed Skating Oval and an end of program lunch at Whiteface on March 14. Sorry, the club does not provide replacement knees or braces and frowns on whining. Although they accept novices, these are by and large lifetime skiers and they've got personalities to match.
